If your iPhone is broken and won't turn on due to it being submerged in water there is hope.  We've restored many iPhones that were completely submerged in water with a 80% success rate.  The key to surviving a fall into a drink is quick action to remove power from the iPhone and drying it out properly.  The batteries almost always need replacing in a wet iPhone scenario because they have a tendency to short out.  There are a couple different drying techniques you can use that will speed up the evaporation process and decrease potential damage to the iPhone.

Here are the steps you'll want to follow to provide the best chance of surviving a wet iPhone scenario.

  1. Remove power from the iPhone as soon as possible and don't power back on until completely dry
  2. Open up the iPhone using the instructions on our website as this will speed up the drying process
  3. Use one of these options to store the iPhone and enhance the drying process
    • Place the iPhone in a zip lock bag with dry rice - plug any openings on iPhone
    • Use a few silica packets to help the drying process
    • Use a hair dryer with low heat
  4. After 1-2 days try and power on the iPhone
  5. Still No Power?
    • Perform an iPhone battery replacement
    • Look for corrosion on the ribbon cable connectors then clean connectors with isopropyl alcohol
iPhone Corrosion
Depending on the type of water the iPhone was dropped in you can have issues with corrosion on the fine connectors.  This will create intermittent problems with the video, power, or external button problems.  If your iPhone got wet and is now experiencing intermittent issues it's probably due to connection corrosion as a result from the water.

You'll want to disassemble the iPhone and clean the fine connectors with a tooth brush and isopropyl alchol or electronics cleaner.  You should be able to see the corrosion if you look closely at these connectors.  Clean the connectors and re-assemble the iPhone.  Depending on the extent of the corrosion this may or may not be enough to resolve the issues.

Recommended Circuit Cleaner
Radio Shack™ Precision Electronics Cleaner that contains Isohexane, Difluoroethane & Ethanol.  This type of cleaner eliminates any corrosion, evaporates, and provides a layer of protection.
