iPod Nano 2nd Gen - Technical Whitepaper
Description:  The iPod Nano 2nd Generation was released in September of 2006.  This followed and built upon the popular 1st Generation Nano.  The casing changed from a two half case design to a full metal jacket.  This model also introduced multiple colors that included Silver, Blue, Green, Pink, & Red.  All of the Nano models use flash memory which reduces memory failure because of the lack of moving parts.

Battery Installation Difficulty
We would rate this installation 4 out of 5 screw drivers (Hard) in terms of difficulty.

iPod Nano 2nd Gen Disassembly Procedure

Disclaimer: Opening the case will void the manufacture warranty if any remains.  TopTechies is not responsible for damage or problems that may result from following the disassembly and replacement procedures.  Please observe all static safe precautions while working inside your iPod.  These instructions require a moderate level of technical ability and proficiency in the use of hand tools as well as a general understanding of electronic components.  Buyer assumes full responsibility for the installation of this replacement battery.

Preperation:
Start with a clean, open table that has good light.  Take the two opening tools out of the battery blister package and set them aside.  Don't forget to shutdown the iPod prior to working on it.

Required Tools: Case opening tools, micro phillips and flathead screwdrivers, & soldering iron

Step #1 - Power Off iPod
Make sure the power is off on the iPod.  Holding down the play button for 6 seconds should shut it down.  Put the Nano in the Hold state with the slider on the top.

Step #2 - Open the Case
     a. Use the case opener tool to remove the plastic cover located on the top of the iPod.  Leverage the tapered part of the opening tool between the metal case and the plastic top.  The top is affixed with double-sided tape.  Set the plastic top aside.

     b. Using the case opener tool, use the same technique to leverage the bottom plastic cover off.  Again, this cover is held down with double-sided tape.  Remove the double-sided tape off the screw heads.  Both top and bottom covers should now be removed.

     c. Using a micro-screwdriver, take out the two screws located on the bottom of the case.  The screws are on opposite sides of each other.  Set the screws aside in a safe area.

     d. Remove and pull out the headphone jack assembly (Ref #1).  Use a small flathead screwdriver for this task.  Leverage it out but not all the way. Important: Make note how the ribbon cable is installed as you pull it out.  You'll need to know this as it is reinstalled in later steps.  Behind where the headphone jack was pulled out (inside the case) you will see another screw that needs to be removed (Ref #2).  Remove this screw and set it in a safe area.
                         (Ref #1)

                        (Ref #2)

     e. Remove the metal bezle that is located to the left of the headphone jack.  This bezel holds in the metal dock connector.  Set the bezel aside.

     f.  Adjust the case so you can now see the TOP opening of the Nano.  Now remove the two phillips screws located on the top.

     g.  The headphone jack assembly is still connected to the bottom of the system board and needs to be disconnected.  You will see a connector that needs to pop up to release the cable.  Using the flat head screwdriver pop the connector to release it.  This cable should remain connected to the top part of the case as the main board slides out of the top.

     h. The system board and screen assembly should now be able to slide out of the TOP of the Nano.  Carefully slide the whole assembly out of the case.

Step #3 - Remove Battery
     a. The battery is located underneath the display.  Carefully remove the display which is affixed with glue and is located on top of the battery.  Once the screen and system board assembly is removed you will have access to the battery.

     b. Remove the battery from the main board by leveraging the plastic case opening tool under it.  Work each corner of the battery until it releases.

     c. Unsolder the three wire battery connections on the system board using a hot soldering iron.  Try not to heat the system board too much, pause between wires while unsoldering.  There may be a clear yellow plastic on the bottom of the system board that may need to be removed prior to unsoldering.  Make note the color order of the battery wires on the system board.  The battery should now be removed from the system board.

Battery Installation Procedure

Step #1 - Install Battery
Put the new battery in the seated opening.  Properly solder the three wires into the proper locations on the motherboard.  The black wire into the ( - );  Red wire into the ( + );  White wire into the ( T ) electrode.  Let the iPod system board cool down between soldering each wire.  You don't want to overheat the system board!  The wiring code is documented in the picture below.

Step #2 - Install System Board
Slide the system board assembly back in place and reassembly all cables, connectors, and screws.

Step #3 - Reassemble Case
Reinstall all cases and covers on the iPod.  Try and reuse the double-sided tape that held together the plastic top and bottom covers.  Below is the correct way to assemble the Hold mechanism on the top of the iPod.

Step #4 - Power On & Charge
Make sure that you charge the battery for a minimum of 3 hours of uninterrupted time.  Overnight is better once it's plugged into it's power adapter.

Congratulations!  You've completed the battery installation procedure for the iPod Nano 2nd Generation.
