iPod 2nd Generation Disassembly Procedure

Disclaimer: Opening the case will void the manufacture warranty if any remains.  TopTechies is not responsible for damage or problems that may result from following the disassembly and replacement procedures.  Please observe all static safe precautions while working inside your iPod.  These instructions require a moderate level of technical ability and proficiency in the use of hand tools as well as a general understanding of electronic components.  Buyer assumes full responsibility for the installation of this replacement battery.

Preperation:
Start with a clean, open table that has good light.  Take the two opening tools out of the battery blister package and set them aside.

Required Tools: Case opening tools

Step #1 - Open the Case
    a.  Begin by laying your iPod on it's back on a soft work surface.  Using the included nylon opening tool gently insert the pointed end between the metal back casing and the acrylic front of the iPod.  Using a gentle prying motion, work the nylon tool down the length of the iPod toward the bottom.  The concealed clips will release as you slide the tool down the iPod's back shell.

   b.  Work the nylon tool in from the bottom of the unit once you have the left side released.  There are 2 clips on the bottom to unlock.  Be careful to not put pressure on the back of the case and accidentally close the top left side where you began the process.  Once the bottom shell is free, it will easily come off of the iPod.  Set it aside.

Step #2 - Remove Battery
    a.  Gently work the battery from the iPod, there are 2 black adhesive strips on the top and bottom of the battery to release.  If they stick to the battery, simply peel them off and reapply them to the top of the hard drive.  It may take some force and use the nylon tool to pry the battery off.  Use gentle force during this process.

    b.  Disconnect the battery from it's mounting point on the logic board.  Note the adhesive strip that needs to be removed prior to disconnecting.  The battery should now be free from the logic board.

Battery Installation Procedure

Step #1 - Insert Battery
Insert the replacement high-capacity battery onto the logic board socket.  It will only plug in one direction.  Then place the battery back onto the adhesive strips making sure that it is centered.  Tuck the wires in neatly to the top of the battery, making sure they do not protrude from the inside of the case.

Step #2 - Reassemble Case
Slide the iPod back cover onto the front shell and gently press toward the front to snap it back on.

Congratulations!  You've completed the battery installation procedure for the iPod 2nd Generation.
