iPod 3rd Generation - Technical Whitepaper
Description:   Apple introduced the iPod 3rd Generation in April of 2003.  Memory options on these models were between 10GB and 40GB.  This iPod used a touch wheel for it's menu navigation and included a dock connector.  It's also recognized by the 4 buttons above the touch wheel.

Battery Installation Difficulty
We would rate this installation 4 out of 5 screw drivers (Hard) in terms of difficulty.  Opening the case is the most challenging part of the process.

iPod 3rd Generation Disassembly Procedure

Disclaimer: Opening the case will void the manufacture warranty.  TopTechies is not responsible for damage or problems that may result from following the disassembly and replacement procedures.  Please observe all static safe precautions while working inside your iPod.  These instructions require a moderate level of technical ability and proficiency in the use of hand tools as well as a general understanding of electronic components.  Buyer assumes full responsibility for the installation of this replacement battery.

Preperation:
Start with a clean, open table that has good light.  Take the two opening tools out of the battery blister package and set them aside.

Required Tools: Case opening tools

Step #1 - Open the Case
    a.  Begin by laying your iPod on it's back on a soft work surface.  Using the included nylon opening tool gently insert the pointed end between the metal back casing and the acrylic front of the iPod.  Focus at the middle of the unit and at the clip points shown in image.  You will insert the tool from the face of the unit, pointed toward the back (metal) portion of the case.  Once inserted, work the tool from the center of the unit, towards the top and bottom.

    b.  You may find that if you press inward on the chrome back along the edge where them clips are located, you will find one spot that is a little more forgiving than teh rest of it.  Insert your tool there to begin.

NOTE:  This is by far NOT an easy process.  Expect to fail repeatedly.  If the included tool becomes damaged, you can resharpen it using a razor knife - don't cut yourself!

    c.  Once you have the bottom cover off, GENTLY tip it towards the top.  Be exceedingly careful of the ribbon connector that goes to the audio jack.  It is easily damaged.  Do not remove the connector.  It is not necessary to replace the battery.

Step #2 - Remove Hard Drive
    a.  Lay the metal back cover flat on the work surface and stand the iPod on it's edge.  You can gently lift the hard drive away from the inside of the iPod.  You should now see the connector on the logic board

    b.  Detach the hard drive from the logic board using your fingernail or the nylon tool.  Apply pressure at the edge of the connector.  The connector should release from the board.  Set the hard drive aside in a safe area.

Step #3 - Remove Battery
Once you have removed the hard drive, look at the logic board and you'll see the large black battery.  Gently unplug the 3 wire connector from the board and remove the battery from the unit.  Set the battery aside from proper disposal later.  You will probably find that the original battery wires are routed under the logic board and will need to be unwrapped from there to remove.  The battery should now be removed in preperation for the new battery.

Battery Installation Procedure

Step #1 - Install Battery
The new battery fits snugly into the opening of the original battery.  It's slightly taller than the original stock battery.  The wires are thicker than the stock batttery and will require some manipulation to fit them inside the case.  Don't pinch the wires fitting them back in.

Step #2 - Install Hard Drive
Set the hard drive back into the case and reattach the cable onto the logic board firmly.  It may make a "click" sound as it's seated onto the logic board.  This is normal.  You may find the attachment is performed more easily with the unit on it's side as you had it with the drive removal.  Once completed, set the back cover onto the unit being careful to make sure the hold switch seats back over the internal switch properly.

Step #3 - Reassemble Case
The back case snaps onto the front easily, just make sure you don't pinch the wires from the new battery.  Once that is completed your iPod is ready to be charged.

Step #4 - Power On & Charge
Make sure that you charge the battery for a minimum of 3 hours of uninterrupted time.  Overnight is better once it's plugged into it's power adapter or FireWire port.  You can go ahead and turn on the unit if it did not already come on automatically by itself.  You may need to perform a reset on the iPod if it does not turn on.

    iPod Reset Instructions:
        1. Connect iPod to the Apple iPod Power Adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet.
        2. Toggle the Hold switch on and off.  (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again)
        3. Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears.
        4. Repeat these steps if necessary.

Congratulations!  You've completed the battery installation procedure for the iPod 3rd Generation.
